WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Jun 12, 2026 – As warmer weather increases pest activity across Connecticut, Richland Pest & Bee Control is urging homeowners to take preventative steps now to reduce the risk of rodents, mosquitoes, ticks, ants, wasps, termites, and other unwanted pests around their properties.
Richland Pest & Bee Control President Michael Sarnese recently appeared on FOX61 to discuss the seasonal increase in pest activity and the importance of early prevention. According to Sarnese, insects become more active during the warmer months, while rodents remain a year-round concern for many Connecticut homeowners.
“Warm weather brings out insects, termites, ants, wasps, mosquitoes, and ticks, but rodents are something we deal with every day throughout the year,” said Michael Sarnese, President of Richland Pest & Bee Control. “The biggest thing homeowners should understand is that pest activity does not mean a property is dirty. Rodents and insects are opportunistic. If they find food, water, shelter, cover, or entry points, they are going to take advantage of it.”
As pest activity increases, Richland Pest & Bee Control recommends that homeowners inspect their properties for common attractants and early warning signs. Simple maintenance steps can help reduce the conditions that allow pest problems to grow.
Recommended prevention steps include:
- Sealing cracks, gaps, and openings around the foundation, siding, doors, windows, vents, and utility lines.
- Removing standing water from kiddie pools, buckets, planters, clogged gutters, tarps, and other areas where water collects.
- Keeping grass cut and trimming overgrown vegetation near the home.
- Storing trash in sealed containers and ensuring bags are tied tightly.
- Clearing clutter, debris, wood piles, and dense cover near the foundation.
- Inspecting sheds, garages, decks, crawl spaces, and basement areas for signs of activity.
- Watching for droppings, chewing damage, scratching sounds, nests, trails, swarmers, or visible insects.
- Contacting a licensed pest control professional when activity continues or signs of infestation appear.
“Many of the things homeowners enjoy having on their property can also create ideal conditions for pests,” Sarnese said. “Landscaping, shade, water features, storage areas, sheds, decks, and dense vegetation can all create places for rodents and insects to hide. Prevention is about reducing those opportunities before a small issue becomes a larger infestation.”
The company says summer pest activity often includes ants entering homes in search of food and moisture, mosquitoes breeding in standing water, ticks thriving in tall grass and brush, wasps building nests around homes and outbuildings, and termites becoming active in areas where moisture and wood conditions are favorable.
Rodent activity, however, remains one of the most persistent concerns across the state.
“Rodents are not just a winter problem,” Sarnese added. “They are active all year, and they are constantly looking for food, water, shelter, and access points. The earlier homeowners address the conditions that attract them, the better chance they have of preventing a serious problem.”
Richland Pest & Bee Control encourages Connecticut homeowners to be proactive, especially during the warmer months when multiple pest pressures can increase at the same time. If prevention efforts are not enough, homeowners should seek help from a licensed professional before the issue worsens.
