Your Rankings Look Fine. So Why Is the Phone Quieter?
Colorado Springs, United States – July 20, 2026 / Integrity Marketing Solutions /
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — July 20, 2026 — Estate planning law firms checking their search rankings and finding them unchanged may be measuring the wrong thing, according to Integrity Marketing Solutions (IMS), a legal marketing firm serving estate planning and elder law practices since 1995. Across its client and prospect base of estate planning and elder law firms nationwide, IMS reports a consistent pattern: firms whose rankings have held steady are nonetheless seeing fewer website visitors, fewer consultation requests, and emptier seminar rooms.
“For decades, estate planning firms could assume that good rankings would eventually become good business,” said Jennifer Goddard, founder and CEO of IMS. “We’re watching that relationship break apart in real time. It’s one of the defining signals of what we’re calling The Great Estate Planning Reset.”
The pattern matches emerging industry data. An analysis published by Attorney at Work describes organic traffic declines of 15 to 25 percent across law firms — even at firms whose SEO strategies previously performed well. BrightEdge data cited by Trial Guides shows a 30 percent year-over-year decline in Google clicks across billions of queries, with the majority of U.S. searches now ending without a click on any website. The cause is structural: when Google answers a legal question directly through an AI Overview, the searcher gets what they came for without visiting the firm that would once have earned that visit.
“The most dangerous part of this shift is that a firm’s dashboard says nothing is wrong — rankings look fine, the website looks fine, and the phone just keeps getting quieter,” said Goddard. “Owners conclude their marketing vendor is underperforming, when the real problem is that they’re trying to solve a 2026 reality with 2024 strategies. The question is no longer whether you rank. It’s whether you’re present where a pre-informed prospect actually forms trust.”
The informational queries that once fed law firm websites — what a trust does, how probate works, whether a will needs updating — are precisely the questions AI now answers on the results page. What remains, IMS notes, are decision-stage searches by prospects who have already educated themselves and are choosing whom to call. Competing for those prospects requires a different posture: becoming a source that AI systems cite, building trust surfaces such as video that prospects use to vet a firm before contacting it, and treating referral and search declines as one connected problem rather than two separate ones.
IMS examines these shifts in its podcast, The Marketing Lawcast, and at the Great Shake-Out Growth Summit for estate planning and elder law firm owners, October 12–14 in Colorado Springs. Details at EstatePlanningReset.com.
