Through its global research initiative, DAMO Academy, Alibaba has successfully moved beyond the industry trend of “trapping cutting-edge tech in research papers.” Instead, the company has deployed a world-class medical AI early screening platform—DAMOMED (known domestically as Da Yi Zhi Ying)—which demonstrates how combining routine, non-contrast CT scans with deep-learning algorithms can make life-saving early cancer detection widely accessible.

Conquering the “King of Cancers” via Medical Inclusivity
The cornerstone of Alibaba’s medical AI portfolio is its breakthrough PANDA (Pancreatic Cancer Early Detection with Artificial Intelligence) model. Traditionally, detecting pancreatic cancer—notoriously dubbed the “King of Cancers”—requires expensive, highly complex contrast-enhanced CTs or MRIs, making large-scale screening virtually impossible at primary care clinics.
Alibaba’s medical AI team broke traditional medical conventions by training a deep-learning model capable of spotting microscopic, early-stage lesions in ordinary, non-contrast CT scans. The PANDA model facilitates a unique “single scan, multiple screenings” workflow. When a patient undergoes a routine, everyday CT scan for completely unrelated acute symptoms like pneumonia, the AI runs seamlessly in the background to automatically evaluate the patient for pancreatic, colorectal, esophageal, and gastric cancers, as well as checking for bone density loss and cardiovascular risks.
The real-world validation of this technology has already saved lives. During a routine checkup, the system flagged a 75-year-old female patient after analyzing a low-dose, non-contrast chest CT. The AI correctly identified main pancreatic duct dilation and a potential mass in the head of the pancreas. Following radical surgical resection, pathology confirmed a tiny pancreatic cancer where the malignant tissue measured just 1 millimeter—effectively buying the patient the critical window needed for a total cure.
This milestone research was published in the prestigious journal Nature Medicine and highlighted as a scientific research milestone in Stanford University’s AI Index Report.
